Saving Pictures from an LG Android Smartphone to an SD Card

Do you need to make sure you’re Pictures, Videos, Music, and Media Files on your LG Android smartphone are all saved to your memory card? This article will assist you in making sure all of your information is backed up to your memory card and not simply saved onto the LG smartphone itself.

~Important Announcement~

An up to date, step-by-step tutorial, with pictures for this topic can be read at How to move pictures, videos and other media files to an SD card on an LG Android smartphone.

LG’s file management system is a LOT better now and while this article can still be a relevant resource I am officially marking this guide Out Of Date.

If your cell phone is an older model or you do not have a File Manager feature built into your LG smartphone then you can refer back to this article and look into downloading a File Manager application from the Google Play Store which will allow you to transfer and copy files from your LG to your SD card.

Saving Pictures from an LG Android Smartphone to an SD Card

Supposedly there is a built in method to backup your media files and save them onto your memory card on an LG Android phone, but it’s not like the file management interface that is built into Samsung and Motorola Android smartphones. The LG application is called Polaris but I never really put much stock into it. Apparently you have to backup each picture one at a time which can be unpractical in many situations. Before we get into a more practical application that will make this process more seamless I suggest you make sure that you actually need to backup your pictures. If your pictures are getting saved to your memory card automatically then you don’t need to back them up. If you need help checking your media files then you can refer to this article on making sure your pictures are not already saved onto your SD Card.

Unmounting and or remove your SD card from the phone is often the easiest way to check. If your pictures are saved onto your memory card then when you remove it from the phone your pictures should disappear, easy as that. If however you unmount or remove your memory card and your information is still showing on the phone then whatever is still showing is stored on the phone and you’ll need to move it to your SD card.

If you find that some of your pictures or media are stored on the device and you need to move those files from your LG Android to a memory card the best tool to use is a File Manager application. Go to the app marketplace also known as the Play Store and do a search for “File Manager” it will show you a list of user friendly applications that will make transferring your media a lot more user friendly. I recommend you use the ASTRO File Manager its one of the best File Managers available, its free, and user friendly. If you would like to know more about using the app then you can read about saving your information from an Android Phone to a Memory Card using ASTRO File Manager.

The ASTRO File manager will permit you to view what is actually saved on your phone as opposed to the SD card and will allow you to move or copy whatever files you need from your phone onto your memory card.

Other Methods to Backup Information

If you just need to know how to move or transfer your media to an external memory card then ASTRO should adequately fulfill your needs. If however you’re looking for some extra security or additional ways to backup your media and device info then you can find a list of a few of the options available on my guide for fixing common android software problems just go over some of those methods and see if any of them suite your needs. If you’re not experiencing problems with your phone then you can stop at step 7 on that guide. You don’t have to do a reset if you don’t want to; either way, your phones information should be nice and secure and you won’t have to worry should you ever need to perform a factory data reset or better yet if your phone ever malfunctions or experiences any issues.

  1. Saving pictures to sd card
what if your storage space on your phone is full but you still have space on your sd card ? I am finding that because my storage space on my cell phone is full I can’t seem to do anything.

    1. What to do when your phone runs out of internal storage…

      Hi Jannette,

That is usually not a very pleasant situation to be in when it comes to smartphones. Without the required storage space your phone is going to have a hard time functioning properly much less allow you to download or add files.

If you have run out of space on your smartphone this is typically the result of not having enough storage space originally on the phone to begin with.  Always check a phones internal storage space before you purchase it, especially when it is one of the more affordable smartphones available. In my humble opinion a smartphone should have, at the very minimum, 8 GB of internal storage available to the user.

If the cell phone doesn’t have enough space then the phone will work fine for the first couple of months but then after it fills up through daily use you’ll have nothing but problems, and by then it will be too late to return the phone to where you bought it from.

Some phone information can be saved or moved to an external SD card aka a memory card but not everything.

If you need to free up space on your phone then start by clearing the cache, and temporary information when available, then move as much as you can from the phones storage to an external memory card. Just remember to get a GOOD memory card. You don’t want it to fill it up right away or have problems later on down the road.

When you begin transferring data to your memory card I recommend that you start by moving your files first. Files such as pictures, videos, images, music, etc which can add up and can often free up quite a bit of space on your phone, don’t forget to set the default storage location for your camera to your SD card as well so you won’t have to move files later, they will just get automatically stored to the SD card.

Then start browsing through your applications and try to find any which will allow you to move them to your external storage. Not all apps will let you move them to a memory card so don’t panic if the option isn’t available.

Check your messages as well. Messaging threads can really add up over time and take up space. If you have any threads that are not too important then you can free up some space by erasing the conversation from the phone.

By just doing some simple cleaning you can usually clear up a decent amount of space on your unit but it really depends on your current situation, especially if there is simply not enough storage space on your phone to begin with.

I hope that helps Jannette, if you have any more questions then don’t hesitate to ask.

    Straight Talk Phone Freezes
I was going to have some pictures developed at Wal-Mart this week. I went to Wal-Mart to try to get my pictures from my phone to make copies of it and it did not work. I asked a sales associate there what I needed to do to get my pictures off of my phone to make some copies. She told me that I needed to download the Figi Film software so I did and I also downloaded the Wal-Mart App. After I did that a day later my phone started freezing and would not do anything. So I called the customer service of Straight Talk to get help. They helped me, and had my phone reset. I would take the battery out and put it back in and so forth, nothing worked. I have gone 2 days now without my phone working. The type of phone I have is a Optimus phone and the makers are LG. What can I do to make my phone work again?

    1. Trying to fix your LG Optimus smartphone

      Hi Marie,

It sounds like your phone does NOT like those apps one bit! Now you said that you “reset” your phone and pulled out the battery… Was pulling out the battery the reset aka a soft reset?

Are you able to access and navigate the phone at all in order to uninstall those apps?

Which LG Optimus do you own? LG has released many different models of Optimus smartphones in their line of smartphones. The troubleshooting steps that you might need to do could be different depending on which specific smartphone that you actually own.

If the phone is totally locked up did the Straight Talk representative mention or try to walk you through a Safe Mode option or how to perform a hard reset without having to access the phones settings?

I would try to avoid doing a hard reset if possible as a hard reset will remove all of the user data from the phone (including those pictures you were trying to copy earlier).

Let me know if you still require help Marie and if you do then let me know which specific LG Optimus you own, what else you might have done to try and fix it yourself, etc and I will do what I can to try and help you get your phone to work properly again.
